Madrid, Feb 29 (Prensa Latina) Spain has called on Israel to stop the construction of new settlements in the Palestinian territories under Zionist occupation.
Specifically, Madrid expressed concern about the recent decision taken by Tel Aviv to build new structure in the West Bank, the latest of a series of announcements about its expansion into occupied territory.
The most recent of these statements refers to the so-called E-1 corridor, a central hub of the West Bank, as well as the expansion of already-existing settlements in Eli and Shilo.
According to newspaper reports, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the resumption of projects to build 3,500 houses on the E-1 corridor, a particularly controversial area because the territorial integrity of a future Palestinian state depends on it.
For the Spanish Government, these settlements ‘are illegal under International Law and constitute a serious threat to the solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict between two States, making a future Palestinian state unfeasible.’
In a statement issued last Sunday, Spain condemned the building of some 5,000 houses in East Jerusalem.
In Spain’s view, in the current context this type of unilateral acts will further remove the possibilities of a negotiation between Israelis and Palestinians.
