Occupied Jerusalem (The Inside Palestine)- The United Nations renewed its refusal to evacuate Palestinians from their homes in the occupied territories by Israel, stressing that it is awaiting an Israeli court’s decision regarding Sheikh Jarrah’s families in occupied Jerusalem.
This came in the comment of Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the Secretary-General of the Organization, Antonio Guterres, in a press conference in its headquarter in New York, on the postponement of the Supreme Court of Israel’ decision regarding a petition submitted by 4 families against the decision to evict them from their homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.
Dujarric said: “We are waiting for the court’s decision, which will be issued later this week, but our position is clear. International law does not permit settlements and does not permit the evacuation of Palestinians from their homes.”
The Occupation High Court, west of Jerusalem, postponed on Monday its decision on an appeal submitted by 4 Jerusalemite families from Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood against the decision to displace them from their homes.
The 500 Jerusalemites who live in 28 houses in the neighborhood are at risk of displacement at the hands of settlement associations after years of complicity with the occupation courts, which recently issued a decision against the seven families, despite the fact that the residents of the neighborhood are the actual and legal owners of the land.
Settler groups claim that the houses were built on land that was owned by Jews before 1948, which the residents deny, as well as the documents in their possession.
